On June 17, at the Society of Civil War Historians' second biennial academic conference, Professor George Rable announced the First Annual Tom Watson Brown Book Award. The winner is Daniel E. Sutherland for A Savage Conflict: The Decisive Role of Guerrillas in the American Civil War, a title in the Civil War Series published by the University of North Carolina Press. The inaugural Tom Watson Brown Book Award recognizes an outstanding scholarly book published in 2009 on the causes, conduct, and effects, broadly defined, of the Civil War. The prize will be awarded at the November 2010 meeting of the SCWH at the Southern Historical Association conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dr. Sutherland will be the keynote speaker at the dinner. This annual award is sponsored by the Watson Brown Foundation, which funds undergraduate scholarships, historic preservation, and grants for southern studies.
